nevling who has been doing surveys at the port now for 19 i 19 narrow years and joined us from the department of public works and as you can imagine in the least 15 and-a-half years surveying has evolved from a manual process to a more complex computerized process but nonetheless, it's a very critical function here at the port of san francisco. it effects things like our drudging control, how we measure that, designings and leasing of our properties repair and construction plans, surveys for least boundary and is et cetera. and alan has worked on an amazing number of projects which will live on in perpetuity. and so it's not that easy to be a port surveyor a lot of the project are actually under the piers and require a boat and bounce along regardless of the tied and get precise measurements regardless of the types of installations and it can be apparently very a scary and alan no has not made it into the the port staff that has fallen into the basen and so you they for not joining it it's an very exclusive club. and so easy an amazing person there is no task that is too diff

if the deal is not reached this week, but potential strike, law shoreman threatening to walk off the ports in the east on gulf coast. this could disrupt billions of dollars in shipments. joining us now ed butowsky, a hell of a way to start a week with the threat after strike. to put it in context, when l.a. had a dock workers strike ten years ago, it cost a billion dollars a day. this is going to affect ports in newark, houston, miami, this could be several billion dollar hits every day to our economy? >> yeah, and i tell you, when you look at it, it's really similar. there are some parallels to the fiscal cliff discussion. because the arguments are about are the royalty payments that the dock workers get for bringing merchandise on board and unloading the cargo and what the similarity is really that we're not-- they're not talking about more business, they're talking about how do we split up the same pie and same thing with the fiscal cliff, we're not talking growing the economy, how do you split up the economy getting the tax revenue and the same thing with the longshoreman strike. which

, there are some additional dollars that tha* the port is lining to be allocated to continue that along the historic arch, it's a great site and i encourage everybody to visit it. i want to give you a quick update on the pool building, you've read a couple of stories this week, it was damaged by a fire on december 1 and very sadly on december 7, the leaders from variety of city department, fire department, department of building inspection, department of public works met with architectural experts and they determined the building was unsaved, it's a sad and many respects to a very amazing chapter in city history, that site over the last -- although the building has really been closed and on the down side since the 70s, it had a very glorious period of time which welcomed olympic swimmers and it was the largest outdoor salt water pool in its time, but we worked with the preservation opportunity and a lot of community stakeholders to try to salvage a sad situation and i'm proud that we've come up with a plan which is going to preserve and conserve some significant elements from the buildi
